Google introduces Latitude GPS tracking for friends

google-latitudGoogle has expanded its map service with a social component known as Latitude. The feature will let owners of smartphones, and users are Chrome, or users who run an iGoogle gadget that identifies their current locations to their friends or to keep track of their own friends, for the coordination of meetings or to follow during a trip.

Users can send emails, Google Talk, SMS messages and status update directly from the other latitude and it is also possible to make phone calls.

Privacy is considered a central element of the service is strictly optional, users do not have to disclose their positions and some users may enter a predetermined place to hide their true positions.

Latitude is now available in an update to Google Maps for BlackBerry mobile, Symbian S60 and Windows Mobile OS smartphones that have GPS or assisted native. Android phones as the T-Mobile G1 will have the software in a few days, while the Google Mobile application for iPhone and iPod touch will also be arriving soon.
